Should the state protect the observance of religious holy days by making them civil holidays? For those committed to the separation of church and state the answer is clearly a "NO!" Civil laws should never be passed to protect the observance of the religious holy days of any particular church. Such laws clearly violate the intention and wording of the First Amendment to the American Constitution, which states that "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion."
