The debate about same-sex "marriage" is a quintessential example of competing values. In some ways it is almost a textbook example of the competition among politics, ethics, morality, and religion.
The gay rights movement did not start in 1982, but for our purposes we reached a significant Canadian milestone in that year. Parliament passed the Charter of Rights and Freedoms in 1982. The justice minister of the day (Jean Chr
